Senior Living Is Even Sweeter in “The Camellia City” – Slidell, LA
From its early beginnings as a railroad camp to today holding the distinction as the largest municipal area in St. Tammany Parish, Slidell is a city that honors and respects tradition all while growing and evolving towards a bright future. Here, the right mix of history and heritage, modern-day amenities and lots of chances to get out among the bayous, rivers and swamps that surround the area makes for a way of life that residents have long cherished and can proudly continue while living here at SummerHouse Park Provence.
Plenty of memorable experiences in our native Slidell happen in the city’s Olde Towne area, which is home to must-see destinations like the Slidell Museum. Located in the town’s old jail, the museum offers free admission and allows visitors to explore photos, exhibits and memorabilia documenting everything from the South’s role in Civil War to its place as an epicenter for Mardi Gras celebrations in the US and globally.
Historic Olde Towne is also home to the Slidell Auditorium, where concerts, festivals and special events are held year-round. There’s also Heritage Park and Municipal Marina, perfect spots for beginning and ending those fun days getting out on the waters of Bayou Bonfouca. While there, locals and visitors alike should try Palmettos on the Bayou for incredible Cajun and Creole cuisine in a distinctive waterfront setting.
Only about a mile away is our part of town, where destinations like Fremaux Town Center await to satisfy cravings for specialty dining, entertainment and some old-fashioned “retail therapy.” Performing arts lovers will also find the Slidell Little Theatre, whose dual stages come alive throughout the year with plays, musicals and other productions which span a wide range of audiences and genres. Back in Olde Towne, the Slidell Amphitheater is also a popular spot for events like the city’s Bayou Jam Concerts, Slidell Movie Nights, and performances by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Parades, art shows and festivals are just some of the additional, community offerings just waiting to be enjoyed here in our native Slidell throughout the year as well.
For outdoor adventures, nothing beats heading out into the Honey Island Swamp and enjoying a nature-filled tour. As one of the nation’s most pristine and unaltered swamplands, Honey Island is home to towering trees, alligators, birds, wild boars, bald eagles and even the legendary Honey Island Swamp Monster which is said to roam the area.
Indeed, no matter a person’s preferences, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy here in the Camellia City. SummerHouse Park Provence sits within easy reach of all this and so much more, including nearby New Orleans and many of our own favorite neighborhood spots for dining and recreation.
