According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), nearly 25 percent of those aged 65 to 74, and 50 percent of those aged 75 and older, suffer from hearing loss. Hearing loss can severely affect the safety of your loved one, and their ability to age independently at home. It can seriously compromise their safety as it affects their sense of balance, increasing risks for falls. Studies have also shown that hearing loss can affect your loved one’s mental health. Their lack of ability to communicate can lead to social isolation, anxiety, confusion, and embarrassment. Even if your loved one doesn’t want to admit it, it is important for you to identify the signs of hearing loss and help them age gracefully in their golden years.
Acknowledge the Problem
Communication is key. As much as you would like to help your loved one, it is important for them to acknowledge the issues that they are facing in order for them to accept your help. Your loved one is likely going through a tough time dealing with the new changes going through their bodies, and may be experiencing emotions such as anger, denial, anxiety, fear, and grief. When communicating with them, remember to empathize with them and provide emotional support. Verbalize your wishes to help them and some suggestions on how you would like to do so – perhaps starting with a doctor’s visit to evaluate their condition.
Doctor’s Appointment
Accompany your loved one to their doctor’s appointment to provide comfort and emotional support. Encourage them to be honest with the doctor with the issues that they are facing. The complications of hearing loss can affect their current lifestyle. Be sure to discuss with the doctor on how your loved one needs to alter their lifestyle to ensure safety and quality of life.
Providing Care
The varying degrees of hearing loss can affect the balance of your loved one and put them at a higher fall risk, which can be fatal especially for seniors living independently. If you need assistance caring for your loved one, you can consider different living options at retirement communities. The trained caretakers are experienced in engaging seniors with hearing loss, providing appropriate assistance in their daily routine while helping them to lead an active lifestyle. Your loved one would be able to connect with peers through engaging activities planned that are suitable for them to participate in. This not only ensures the safety of your loved one, but also improves their mental and emotional well-being.
