As we age, we become more susceptible to falls due to accidents, underlying health conditions, or physical changes in our bodies. According to statistics, one in three people aged 65 and above falls each year. The aftermath of falls also causes more serious injuries, such as broken bones, internal bleeding, disabilities, or even fatalities. Due to the fear of falling, many older adults avoid engaging in physical activities, or even leaving their home. However, that does not need to be the case! Thankfully, there are simpler ways to prevent falls.
Stay Physically Active
Exercising regularly helps your muscles and joints to stay strong and flexible. That improves your balance, mobility, and bodily coordination, preventing falls in the long run. Opt for senior-focused wellness programs that are suitable for you and your physical abilities. You can also engage in light daily exercises, such as brisk walking, yoga, or Tai-Chi.
Get Sufficient Sleep
Insomnia or sleep deprivation leads to higher risks of falls. It is also associated with long-term memory loss, diabetes, and other medical conditions. It is recommended for you to get between 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted rest each night.
Wear Suitable Shoes
Inappropriate footwear, such as heels, flipflops, or ill-fitting sizes, can cause you to lose your balance and fall more easily. Opt for fitting, sturdy, and flat shoes that have non-skid soles to help you move around safely. Avoid walking on stairs or floors wearing only socks.
Remove Hazards
Clutter around your home can be potential safety and fall hazards. Relocate boxes, electrical cords, coffee tables, racks, or plant stands that are situated in high traffic areas that can cause you to trip. If you have rugs or carpets around your home, ensure that they are properly secured or tucked in with slip-resistant backing. If you are able to do without them, you can also remove them completely.
Install nonslip mats in your bathtub or shower to prevent slips when the floors are wet. If you have trouble standing for long periods of time, you can consider installing grab bars or a bath seat, which allows you to sit while showering.
