Biloxi Lighthouse
You can’t say you visited Biloxi without paying a visit to the Biloxi Lighthouse. Erected in 1848, the Biloxi Lighthouse is a signature landmark of the city and boasts a history of having the most female keepers than any other lighthouses in the United States. Admission is priced at $5 for those aged 12 years old and above, $2 for ages six to 11, and complimentary for those under five years old. If you plan to go with a group, there is an added discount. For a more well-rounded experience, we recommend going for the guided tours that take place from 9 am to 10 am daily.
Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum
When the weather’s cold or it’s raining, you can take this opportunity to head to the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum. If you’re a seafood lover, you’ll no doubt enjoy this place as you discover the history of the seafood and maritime industry in the region. This museum was formed in 1986 and has since been one of the city’s iconic attractions. Look forward to seeing interesting artifacts while touring the museum, especially the 65-foot-long models of the Biloxi Schooner.
Ship Island
Considering that the beaches on the mainland can get quite crowded, you can consider hopping on a boat to Ship Island for that quick beach escape without the hustle and bustle. Ship Island is located 12 miles away from Biloxi’s coast and is popular among residents and tourists alike as day trips from the city. Here, you can find pristine beaches that are perfect for relaxing and other activities, such as snorkeling, swimming, and searching for seashells. The beach is so serene that you’ll feel like you have been transported to a private island. You can also discover local wildlife and play with the friendly dolphins if you have the chance to spot them.
Hurricane Katrina Memorial
In August of 2005, the Gulf Coast states, which include Mississippi, were hit by Category 5 Hurricane Katrina. The hurricane was extremely devastating as it destroyed many infrastructures and took the lives of 1,833 people. To remember this day, the Hurricane Katrina Memorial was built on Main Street in Biloxi to pay tribute to the victims and where visitors can pay their respects. At this memorial, you can read the stories and look at photographs of the disaster. As this is an emotionally moving attraction, this memorial is a good stop in your itinerary to have an eye-opening experience of how powerful mother nature can be.
