Veterans with impairments and elderly veterans who require assistance as they age now have assisted living programs available to them. If you are a veteran and meet the requirements, you can either petition for residency in a veteran’s home or get an assisted living benefit from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Assisted Living Benefits from the VA
Veterans might get higher pensions from the Department of Veterans Affairs to help cover the cost of assisted living which can include the following:
Aid and Attendance and Housebound
Aid and Attendance and Housebound pensions may be available to disabled or elderly veterans and their surviving spouses. Allowances like this are paid on top of the standard monthly pension. Veterans can qualify for a pension increase, enhanced pension, or assisted living benefit from the VA. Assisted living community care can be expensive for older adults and handicapped veterans, but these perks are meant to help offset those costs.

Veteran-Directed Home and Community-Based Services

All enrolled veterans are eligible for this perk if they are found to have a clinical need for it and it is included in the VHA Standard Medical Benefits Package in their location. The VHA’s Standard Medical Benefits Package is available to all Veterans, regardless of age, who were discharged or relieved from active duty on terms other than dishonorable.
Veterans Homes and Assisted Living Communities
Veterans of the Armed Forces retirement communities are comparable to nursing homes in that they provide veterans of varying ages with round-the-clock expert nursing care, rehabilitation services, social work support, and geriatric assessment and management. Respite care, palliative care, and hospice services are also available in some communities, in addition to care for the recovery of mental health issues and specific care for veterans with dementia or other cognitive deficits. Veterans of all ages can participate in events, and families can enjoy the space too. Veterans are welcome to bring their pets for visits or to stay with them, and they are welcome to decorate their rooms as they see fit. While most veterans only spend a few months in a community, there are many who never leave.
