How healthy are your fingernails? This may be something you never give much thought to, but you should. If your nails are in good shape, it says something about you. This not only applies to how well you look (as to the appearance of your nails), but how healthy your nails are.
By adhering to these manicure tips as you age, you stand a better chance of having healthier, more attractive nails. Once again, that says a lot about you and your overall health.
Let’s examine nail care for retirees.
Nutrition Is Important
You probably didn’t think that you were going to see something about nutrition included here, but… Surprise! Truth be told, nutrition is extremely important for the health of your nails. If your nails are healthy, coincidentally, you stand a better chance of being healthy. To support healthy nails, you’ll need to consume a nutrient dense diet. Brittle, dry nails can be caused by a lack of nutrition. Foods rich in vitamins C and B, as well as calcium, can improve fingernail health.
Key nutrients included in your meal preparation will help support optimal nail health. Use leafy greens and fresh fruits. For good nail health, eggs, salmon, and lean meats are recommended. High nutritional content can be found in whole grains, nuts, and beans, which help your nails stay in excellent condition.
Hang Nails Should Be Cut Off
Don’t pick at your hangnails! When the skin around a hangnail is torn off, infection can be the result. Remove hangnails correctly and promptly rather than tearing at them or picking at them. Here’s how:
- Use soap and water to thoroughly wash your hands
- With a nail scissors or nail clipper, cut hanging skin bits off
Moisturizing
Moisturize your cuticles and nails after you have washed and dried your hands/nails. Painful hangnails may be prevented by frequent moisturizing. It will also help maintain the flexibility of your nails. To the surface of your fingernails, you may even want to consider applying nail oils on a regular basis.
Drying Your Nails
Your fingernails should be thoroughly dried after each handwashing. Your nails may be more susceptible to breakage if they are left wet. What’s more, bacterial infections can be caused by moisture around fingernails.
Fingernail Scrubbing
Beneath uncut, long fingernails, dead skin cells, germs, and dirt gather. Use a fingernail brush to scrub underneath your fingernails. This removes and loosens the accumulation of dirt beneath your fingernails.
Fingernail Trimming
Fingernails should be regularly trimmed using a nail clipper. This can be a difficult task if your nails have thickened as you’ve aged. Consider cutting your nails after a warm shower, which softens nails. Once a week is not an outrageous schedule, regardless, the end of the nail should meet the fingertip.
Remember this: As important as general personal hygiene tasks are, specific fingernail care is equally important.
