Lack of exercise is not good for our physical health. Older adults face not just weight gain but also loss of muscle tone. If you are not active, you may notice you get winded more quickly. Or maybe you find it harder to do even simple tasks such as standing up from their seat. Even though we want to engage in all our previous activities, our bodies might not be ready yet. With spring here, it is the perfect time to start moving again. After a long time of reduced physical activity, you need to reengage slowly with exercise and not overdo it. With that in mind, you can start going for long walks, cycling, jogging, or doing yoga. Read on to learn about how to exercise safely in spring!
Be Honest With Yourself
Look back on the year and acknowledge if you have developed any bad habits. Maybe you sit in front of the TV and snack every day. Or you have stopped exercising because you didn’t feel like it. Be honest but you don’t have to despair or feel guilty. You are not alone in this and you can always start again.
Ease Into It
Ease into your new exercise routine and don’t overdo it. You can start with simple chair exercises such as sitting and stretching. Try sitting in a chair with your feet on the floor. Then, roll your head gently clockwise a few times. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Next, switch directions and roll your head counterclockwise for a few circles.
Listen to Your Body
Your body is great at telling you what is right for it. This is one of the golden rules of physical therapy. If you feel any pain, stop the exercise. The best way is to slowly increase your exercise activity. Muscle soreness is normal and if you experience it, let your muscles rest for a few days before continuing your exercise.
Remember to Hydrate
Always keep a bottle of water with you when you exercise. Hydration is essential but often overlooked. We lose water all day long and exercise only accelerates that loss. So, remember to drink water often when you exercise.
Give It Time
Change doesn’t happen overnight. Creating good exercise habits will take two to three months to show results. Give yourself time and not expect too much to happen instantly. Don’t push yourself too hard as well. Keep to the exercise routine for a few months to enjoy the benefits of it.
